This Sabbath we wrap up our thoughts on the Beatitudes. Jesus placed several important growth secrets at our finger tips in a short set of summary statements. We have been sharing time together growing through, and healing from, some of our issues; and many of us have discovered the importance of groups. Today, let's look at the ground we've covered.

God answers Paul, "...'My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.' Most gladly therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me." 2 Cor 12:9 (NASB)
Most of us are under the impression that God only uses really gifted, extraordinary people. That is simply not true. God uses ordinary people. In fact, He does His best with weak people. People are not helped by our strengths; they're helped when we are honest about our weaknesses. This Healing Choice is about sharing our weakness, not our strength; the only sharing that really helps others.

It may seem silly, but if we don't actively choose to grow, we will not grow. All things that God created are in the habit of growing. Churches that stop growing, die; tress that stop growing, die; all living organisms that are thriving, grow. Humans tend to put roadblocks in the way of such growth, and removing them is our next "Healing Choice."

Forgiveness offers a way out. It does not settle all questions of blame and fairness, but offers a way to start over, to begin anew. Alexander Solzhenitsyn wrote that this is what separates us from animals. Not our capacity to think, but our capacity to repent and forgive makes us different. Only humans can perform that most unnatural act, which transcends the relentless law of nature.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness sake . . . There are two kinds of hunger that people have. There's a spiritual hunger and there's a physical hunger. We're going to look at the spiritual hunger that we have to have in our hearts in order for God to change us.

This week we make the choice to be cleansed and forgiven, which means we must confess. When we do, we can be among those who are blessed because they are pure in heart. Time to clean house!

When our world surrendered to sin, hopelessness began to slowly build into an epidemic. But God began immediately in the garden itself to point to a better future, and Jesus sealed the deal with His death and resurrection. In Christ there is no such thing as a hopeless situation. Choice number three this week -- choose hope.

Healing Choices, Blessed are Those... |

Blessed are the poor in spirit. . . . . . . .
Blessed are those who mourn . . . . . . .
Blessed are the meek . . . . . . . . . .
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst . . . . . . . . . .
Those words just don't make us think of being "bessed." As we begin our journey to a better New Year by making Healing Choices, today we consider these troubling words from Jesus. Strength, good looks, connections, and the competitive instinct brings a person success in today's world and a society like ours. But could Jesus be saying that being His disciple who can heal and be healed might require some different qualities? Dependence, sorrow, repentance, and a longing to change - these just may be the gates to God's kingdom.

We have focused the brightest light of centuries of preaching on the youngest son in this ancient story. This month we have shone some of the glory on the eldest, and today we happily point to the real prodigal, the Father himself.

As we study, Michael Yaconelli reminds us of these facts: "According to His critics, Jesus 'did God' all wrong. He went to the wrong places, said the wrong things, and worst of all, let just anyone into the kingdom. What made them furious was what we are marveling at in this parable in the first place - His recklessly lavish abundance thaqt throws the door of His love to the whosoevers, the just-anyones, and the not-a-chancers like you and me.

There she will sing as in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt. 'In that day,' declares the Lord, 'you will call me "my husband;" you will no longer call me "my master."'" When everyone has had enough, when abundance is recognized, you are free to allow a transformation from scarcity. Response is the right mode for worship, but to what do you respond? The amazing grace and abundant love of a Holy God for a broken, fallen, rebellious world. Remember that when you hear of the four living creatures in the presence of God crying "Holy, Holy, Holy". They do not have the most boring job in the world, they are, in fact, simply responding in amazement and and awe.

If you see the world through the eyes of abundance, then you can see the law of God differently. God is not trying to limit your fun, He is trying to bless you. This is also true of all those rules about food and other behaviors. God is in love with you and He wants the best for you. God wants you to have the best, most fun, abundant life possible even in the midst of a sinful world.

What Fuels God's Church.mp3 |

When Jesus was on Earth, He gave guidance to the church in many areas. He showed us how to follow God, He demonstrated a connected prayer life, and many other things. One that I would like to examine for our church is the method that Jesus used to reach people. Jesus met people as someone who was interested in their good, he spent time with them, learned and met their needs, and when they trusted Him, He asked them to follow Him. This is the outreach process that we believe in at Sunset Oaks. This is what it means to make a ripple.

All of our activities are outgrowths of what we believe. What we believe however, does not always make its way to the surface. Are there any Biblical models to help us find a way to make what is on the inside come to the forefront of our church lives?

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, "What commandment is the foremost of all?" "The foremost is, 'Hear oh Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all you soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength." Mark 12:28 - 30
The word that describes this purpose is worship. The church exists to worship God. How do we love God with all our heart? By worshiping Him! It doesn't matter if we're by ourselves, with a small group, or with 10,000 people. When we express our love to God, we're worshipping.
